The Trisha Goddard Show

9 April 2007 by Tim 16 Comments

Comes on immediately after the children’s programming on 5. So this morning I find Big in tv trance watching it. Frankly, I’d rather she watched porn.

Never watched it but I’m guessing it’s one of those delightful (??) shows where everyone washes their dirty laundry in public amid cheers/jeers from the audiance? Lovely (not)
Why can’t they find something better to put on???

Whilst I agree with you that these programmes are generally crap, small person used to watch them occasionally and they provoked some very interesting discussion between us.
I loved those discussions as it was (and still is) wonderful to see how her emotional side was developing and find out her perspective on the world.
I’m damned sure you would rather have an emotional discussion with Big rather that one which delves into the [sordid] depths of adult sex ๐Ÿ˜‰

you know Claire, I’m not sure I could possibly choose one over the other of those for least desirable conversations ๐Ÿ˜‰ “mummy why is that lady upset at her best friend for sleeping with her boyfriend” doesn’t seem that much better than “mummy why are all those people not wearing any clothes and what are they doing” somehow!

I don’t think sex is dirty.
And I think I would rather just talk about sex than discuss:

    • Warring Twins! I won’t do time for your crime
    • You had sex with my man! Don’t deny him his baby!
    • Daughter in danger! Is my daughter a prostitute?
    • Missing! My husband stole my daughter.
    • Too old to be bold? Gangster Grans and Pumped Up Pops!

I’m with you on this Tim. Some of those programmes are ok – I used to watch Ricki Lake quite a bit, in the perinatal haze with Violet – but Trisha is really right down there at the bottom. As trashy as, yet without the entertainment value of, Jerry.

I don’t think sex is dirty either Tim generally, but there are some aspects of sex that I wouldn’t want my dd to watch just yet as I think it would give her a distorted view of what sex is all about. So yes, I think I would rather tackle the subject headings you listed above than some aspects of sex.
However, I do think that programmes like Trisha present the subjects in a far too sensationalist way – not quite Jerry Springer but aiming in that direction – which is unnecessary and only provides the participants with their 5 mins of fame. Small person’s response has always been “why on earth would they want to discuss their problems on TV?” ๐Ÿ˜‰ She ain’t wrong.

I have an issue in that I don’t believe in censoring what Big watches, I think she should be free to follow her interests. As far as Trisha is concerned, if she absolutely must, then she can watch it when I am not in the room, because I like it even less than I like the bloody Tweenies.
In general, I think learning about sex is important and useful.
Learning about the lumpenproletariat who participate in Trisha doesn’t seem much use at all to me.

Oh, I think Trisha’s worse than Jerry Springer, because of the hypocrisy involved. Jerry makes no effort to resolve their problems (apart from his risible Final Thoughts – take care of yourselves and each other!), but Trisha portrays her show as some kind of public counselling service. Well, she ain’t no Montel Williams. (Is he still around??? More perinatal daytime tv watching!)
And tbh I have no problem with censorship, when it involves my time or money. I don’t buy my kids trashy books, I don’t buy them trashy films, I have no qualms about saying I don’t want FoxKids on the tv, etc. There’re plenty of other ways to learn about the spectrum of human relationships than watching exploitative nonsense like Trisha.

Definitely cannot disagree with you Tim about the Tweenies – it should be made an offence to broadcast that cr@p. It is insulting to the intelligence of children.
