Met Office A significant drop in global average temperature in January 2008 has led to speculation that the Earth is experiencing a period of sustained cooling.

(“January 2008 may seem particularly cold compared to January 2007 — the warmest January on record and largely due to the warming phenomenon El Niño — but this merely demonstrates the year-to-year natural variations in our climate.

In future, while the trend in global temperatures is predicted to remain upwards, we will continue to see inherent variability of this kind.”)

So we need to produce a few more emissions to warm it up a bit? Right, i’ll go and switch all the lights on….

OFFS! That first paragraph completely skews the context. The next paragraph goes on about an underlying rise “almost certainly caused by man-made emissions …”.
This is typical of the majority of news media at the moment. They spout meaningless statistics to support whichever bandwagon they’re currently on. In this case: unsubstantiated “speculation” and unsupported claims about what is “almost certainly …” true.
    It drives me mad!
