I spent yesterday collecting Lily, my eldest, from university in London and delivering her home to Halifax.
Three hours drive down the M1 to East London.
An hour and a half going up and down four flights of stairs with bags and boxes.
A leisurely trip north up on the M11, stopping for pizza near P’boro and for sundaes and coffee just north of Newark.
Much faster unloading in Halifax, no bloody stairs.
More coffee and a long chat with Lily and my ex-wife about cats and reading and foreign languages.
Then home armed with a rather good collection of French and Spanish resources, and some other lovely nice books.
All in all, a very tiring day, but not in the least unenjoyable.
The stop for sundaes was at an OK Diner. For anyone who hasn’t experienced them they are rather wonderful recreations of ’50s Americana dotted around the north of England.
Ah, she’s beautiful. Proud Daddy moment of grown up girl!

I just left a long reply on your ‘what’s in a word?’ post but forgot to put in a mail address and lost the lot – V irritating! Might do it agian later! If I get chance….
OK diners would be ok if they did anything much for veggies (granted, icecream sundae would be ok…)
Don’t you have pretty much the same problem with all the rest though? I mean, that Veg Melt thing Jax gets from McD really doesn’t look much like ANYTHING I might fancy eating.
OK do “The All Day Vegetarian – Freshly scrambled eggs served on a slice of buttered toast with griddled mushrooms, tomato, baked beans and hash browns.” but that is about it.
So at least they are trying – I mean, how much vegetarian food would you expect in a 50s American Diner? 🙂

In context of services etc. then some other places are a bit better. We often stop at Little Chef, as we know SB will eat the kiddies veggie breakfast, and she likes them – it’s the equivalent of Mc D for her, she can spot the portly chef at a 1000 yards….. If the non-fried up food was rather more eatable it would be ok.
As for Mc D, well we have never been in one anyway.
I don’t really mind some places not doing veggie food as long as I have other options, I think McD should forget it and just stickt to what they do best.
What McD do best is marketing. The food sucks, but somehow I always seem to remember it was better than it was, and am always mildly disappointed in consequence.
I have often thought that there is space in the market for a real good small chain (like OK) of veggie restaurants dotted on roads like the A1 and M1.
Well I love Burger King’s spicy bean burger. I want one now.
Go get a nice bacon sandwich and calm yourself down. 🙂
