IKEA and 99s

20 September 2006 by Tim 11 Comments

Continuing our summer visits to heritage sites, having despatched Jax off to work, Monday saw us off to that great British institution IKEA. Our mission, to pick up some bits and pieces Lily needs for uni.

IKEA was, well, pretty much the IKEA we all know and um, love. Stocked full of the customary mediocre, over-priced tat and not very much of what we wanted. We did manage to replace the three matt black bowls Small broke a while back with three gloss black bowls, and get a replacement rug for the living room, had lunch in the restaurant and then headed off to Sainsburys to get the rest of Lily’s bits.

The afternoon we passed pleasantly at Shibden Park, which is just outside Halifax, We found some ducks and geese and a rather good play area, with the full array of swings, slides, rocking and turning things and everyone had a good time. Everything did have a kind of end of summer look to it, the rides were showing signs of wear and tear, peeling paint and so on, but nothing you would not expect. It is an excellent park, good car park, and in season there are a mini railway and boats to play on too. Another time maybe.

We wrapped up with 99s and Magnums. (Sharp intake of breath there, I very nearly added a butcher’s apostrophe). The Magnums were Magnums and the 99s were frankly not very good at all, Big and Small didn’t seem to mind, but I polished off the end of Small’s and the ice cream was rubbish.

A good time, as they say, was had by all.

Well, at best Ikea could be called functional, but i can’t honestly say it is overpriced – have you looked at the cost of garage racking in homebase!
Goodluck to Lily at uni ๐Ÿ™‚

Funnily enough, no, I haven’t looked at the price of garage racking in Homebase. Frankly, I have never had the urge.
I might have, IF we could get into our garage to put some up, but our garage is so full of stuff, there is no way to get in there to put up some racking to put the stuff on, IYSWIM.
Nor do I have a full opinion on whether Homebase is more or less overpriced than IKEA. But I am inclined to think that you are right.
PS: When I were a lad you could go out for the evening with a five pound note, get drunk, smoke a packet of 20 No 6, get fish and chips while you were staggering home and still wake up with change in your pocket.

Is Big pointing to Small’s super-dense ice cream? It seems odd that the smallest person is making the biggest impression on the bench!
    Hope university treats Lily well.

Have you told Alison that is what you do at work, then?

She is doing a degree in Art Restoration and Conservation (plus what Chris said, I expect).
Bob, I think Lily sat down first, Big went and sat as close as she possibly could to her, without actually being on her lap, and Small took possession of everything that was left over.

I was being polite C – in fact I deleted the bit of my comment that said “apart from take drugs and shag boys” because I thought it wasn’t the sort of thing fathers needed to be reminded of! (And anyway she might like girls, who knows?)
C tries at work, but he’s too old for such tiring pursuits really ….
Oh, and that degree sounds really interesting – bet you end up with a pretty good general knowledge from it too, loads of science and history etc.

Her other choices were for Classics, this way she gets to study the kind of stuff she is interested in, and comes out of it with a degree and a craft.
